The Red Devils will face Ajax in Stockholm, with the winner booking a place in the group stage of next season’s Champions League.
Jose Mourinho’s side finished sixth in the Premier League, as well as winning the EFL Cup at Wembley. Neville says adding another trophy would cap off a successful campaign, but failing to beat the Eredivisie giants would be seen as a poor year.
“I think it would be a brilliant season [if they win],” he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
“You talk about assessing United’s season…it all hinges on Wednesday night.
“If they lose, you’ll look back and think actually it’s really disappointing, the EFL Cup was probably bottom of their list of priorities.
“But if they get into the Champions League and win two trophies – no other Man United manager has won a trophy in his first season, so to win two I think that could be a bit of a springboard to kick on next season, no question.
